According to the Department for Education (DfE, 2025), there has been a significant rise in the number of pupils identified with autism as their primary need. The proportion of pupils receiving educational support services for autism has increased by 4.7% compared with 2015/16 figures.
Autism is now the most common type of need among pupils with Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans, accounting for 33.6% of all cases.
These figures highlight the growing demand for effective, sustainable, and evidence-based support within educational settings — support that enables staff to meet the needs of autistic children confidently and ensure better outcomes for these young people. Additionally, the integration of speech therapy for schools can further enhance the support for autistic children, ensuring a comprehensive approach to their educational development.
